Repurposed Wood Dining Table

I have found that designing and making your own furniture is such a rewarding experience! It can be a very lengthy process like this few month dining table project but to have this piece for a lifetime is priceless. Today I am going to share how my Dad helped me make my dream table a reality!

First things first, I had to find wood. Luckily, my husband is amazing at finding super random stuff I need when I ask him for ideas and his dad had this truck we were able to pull the wood off of:

We took 2 planks of wood and made sure to take all of the nails and staples out of them. We then put them through a planer about 2-3 times to lighten them up. We cut them into 4 planks that were 6 foot in length. We kept a few inches over 6 foot to account for any issues that could occur. When we put all three together the table measured three feet across and 6 foot long.

After everything was planed and cut we then had to add biscuit joints to put them all together. My dad used a biscuit joint slot cutter. We measured out 6-8 equal spaces on the inside of the planks and cut out the biscuit spots. We then used wood glue and filled the joints and side of the planks. We put the biscuits into the cut outs and put the wood planks together one at a time. Watch this video to see how to use biscuit joints for a table. Just make sure to also use wood glue on the inside and in the joints. After we added each plank we used clamps to hold them together. When we were done it looked like this:

We let this sit for a few days and then cut the sides to make sure it was completely even and sanded the surfaces. My Dad added a piece of wood on the bottom of the table to then attach the legs to (don’t forget that wood glue). I found these awesome 30 inch hairpin legs at Amazon, of course! This video will show you how to attach them to a table. Mine looks like this:

We then used black epoxy to fill all of the holes. If you do use epoxy make sure it is super hot outside because it takes forever to dry! It took a good 2-3 weeks to have the epoxy set for this project. Once the black epoxy had been set and sanded my Dad put a clear epoxy coat on. This video is a great example of how we used the black epoxy, but we didn’t tape anything off. This video then shows you how we put our clear coat on top for the finished look.

While I am not able to go into full details about everything you can easily checkout the videos I linked that give much better detail for how to do each process. This project took about a month from start to finish because the epoxy took so long to dry. I would definitely recommend making anything with epoxy when it is at least 80 degrees or hotter outside.

Here is a list of everything you will need:

4 wood planks 6 feet long

Planer

Sander

Clamps

Biscuits

Biscuit cutter

Black Epoxy

Clear Epoxy

Wood Glue

Screws/ Screwdriver

2 extra pieces of wood to attach the legs to

I then finished off the look with four chairs and a wooden bench from none other then Wayfair. The mix of browns and black really tied this piece together. Now to add something to the wall behind it to finish off the look and give it a more homey feel but that will have to wait for another day.

I hope this gave you some ideas of some cool furniture you can make yourself! Also a huge shout out to my Dad for helping with the majority of ensuring this project comes to life!
