Parts of a Book Lesson
Before a student starts to read fluently, an important topic to explicitly teach them about is pieces of the book and how to handle it. As an education specialist I am on a journey this year to create a cohesive and scaffolded tool with all of the reading alternate standards and lessons to go with them. So today, I will start with the very first foundational thing all students need to learn about, parts of a book.
Alternate Standards
This lesson plan and slides helps ensure students are able to successfully understand the alternate standards of:
1. Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
1a. Follow words from left to right, top to bottom, and page by page.
1b. Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequences of letters.
1c. Understand that words are separated by spaces in print.
Common Core Standards
The alternate special education standards are also tied to the common core standards of:
Components of the Lesson
As an Education Specialist, I have learned the power of vocabulary and explicitly teaching each standard. That’s why I created All about Books because it offers teachers the opportunity to directly break down each part of a book in an I Do, We Do, You Do structure that teaches them the academic vocabulary they need to know in a fun way! See example below:
The best thing about this lesson is that it allows you to easily edit it to any book you may want to use. Yet, is set up with virtual read aloud of some fun Mo Willems books so no physical book is needed if you are planning last minute or working virtually. Of course, the icing on the cake is the activities that allow students to dive into the topic and show what they know together and then by themselves.
