Social vs. Emotional

Before I start to post more content to both the social and emotional aspects of learning I wanted to do a post comparing and contrasting what this looks like in a classroom because even I feel like I am constantly confusing this topic. My brain though had to make a visual for this though so here you go:

When it comes to social and emotional while they’re both interpersonal skills it is important to remember that (ideas from difference between.com):

Emotional:

  • Focus on students own personal feelings- can then help them understand others feelings later.

  • Can focus more on current time of how they feel, once they can understand that then you can start to talk about how situations in the future may make them feel.

Social:

  • This is more situations of how the peer interacts with others.

  • When doing lessons for social usually they are done thinking about future social situations that could occur.

I hope this gave you a better understanding of the differences and see how they can work together for the students learning.

For SEL (social emotional learning) standards visit the CDE website->Document version of the T-SEL Competencies and Conditions for Thriving

Until next time,

Happy Teaching
