Heart Letter Board
Today I wore my pink striped heart sweater (from Asos) to share with you how I put together my monthly holiday board for the upcoming Valentine’s Day. I made this board last year with a few items from Home Depot and a lot of help from my Dad to be able to create a huge letter board for my class and I have been obsessed ever since!
Every month I change the saying, decorations, and work displayed by my students that has a seasonal theme and with Valentine’s Day around the corner I was ready for some pink hearts.
On the top I used a heart felt (hahaha) banner. I have found that felt last sooooooooooo much longer than paper items. It’s also very durable. I really do not like to buy items and only use them once in my classroom so instead I purchase decorations with the thought that this item will be around for a long time. Felt is your friend then. I have seen many a Pinterest posts who show you how to make them which could be a super cute art project to get your students involved.
Since I teach Resource this year, I do not have the luxury of time on my hands for art projects though and decided to purchase my felt banner from non other than amazon. Felt banners tend to be on the cheaper side, I think the most I’ve paid is about $15 tops.
On my board I then also hang some type of festive item in the middle under the letters because at first it looked too bare without anything. I found this fabulous heart decor at Target last year. It wasn’t there this year but let’s face it. Target always has something for $3-$5 in their holiday section that looks nicer than the dollar store and doesn’t make you cringe when you put it in your basket when it comes to price.
My letter board process now takes me about 10 minutes before school and I only do this once a month. I am a person who has to decorate for the season. I have to, it’s in my bones. Last year in my class it would kill me that I hadn’t thought ahead to have stuff decorated for the season. Since I am a special education teacher, I trie to ensure all of my students are exposed to all types of things, and holidays/seasons are one of them.
My students also love to comment on my super fun boards that I go all out for. Every now and again I really surprise them and I love to see them walk in with that “WOW” expression. Now I don’t do this every time but once I have a little practice at this board thing over the next few years I’m sure I’ll come up with some great ideas to decorate it.
I hope this gave all of you teachers out there some idea of some inexpensive ways that you can make your space feel like home for both you and your students.
Happy Creating!
